Guide to Resources on Poland: Politics and Sociology

Books

Books on Politics and Sociology are located on the First Floor of the Library. Politics is generally classified as P.XII, which covers politics, political sociology, political movements, histories of political thought, political philosophy, nationalism and ethnicity. Sociology is classified as P.XIX and covers social life, social history and socio-economics. Political sociology is classified as P.XII. For detailed classification please see our classification scheme guide page. Not all the books are kept on the open shelves.  Items kept in our local stores can be identified by the following classmark - SSEES Local Store and can be requested at the Library’s issue desk. Additionally some less heavily-used books are kept at the UCL Store outside London. Their location is marked as Stores - SSEES Depository. These books can be requested by completing the online store request form . For more information on requesting books, see our FAQ  page.

Journals and newspapers:

The Library provides access to a wide range of printed and digital journals and newspapers on Politics and Sociology. Depending on the title they may be available in print, digital or microform format, or more than one format. Additionally a number of titles are kept in store outside London, and these can be recalled using the online store request form. Printed editions of journals and newspapers are shelved on the Lower Ground Floor of the Library. It should be noted that the Library provides access to a large number of digital journals and newspapers and it may be easier and more convenient to access them this way. It should be stressed, however, that the number of Polish journals available digitally is limited. Examples of titles available digitally include Studia Socjologiczne and Sprawy Międzynarodowe, while English language materials are also well-represented. E-journals can be found on Explore.

The Library also subscribes to a number of Polish dailies and weeklies, such as Polityka, Wprost, PrzeglÄ…d Tygodniowy, Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita. They are available in printed format and can be found on the Lower Ground Floor. Additionally access to some materials from Gazeta  Wyborcza and the Polish News Bulletin is available via the Lexis Nexis database.

Audio-visual collection

Documentaries on Polish history, politics and current events are listed on the SSEES library website.
