Overview

The UCL SSEES Library purchases books, journals and e-resources that reflects the School’s teaching, learning and research interests in the area of economics.

Books

The majority of books relating to general business and economics topics will be found on the first floor of UCL SSEES Library, in the section labelled Misc. The specific subdivision of this class that refers to economics begins with (Roman numerals) XVI.

The specific subdivision of this class that refers to economics begins with (Roman numerals) XVI, and is subdivided further as set out below:-

XVI.1              Economics, economic history and management in general

            XVI.1.a           International economic co-operation (e.g. European Union)

            XVI.2              Economic theory, statistics

            XVI.3              Agriculture

            XVI.4              Industry

            XVI.5              Labour, trade unions

            XVI.6              Co-operative movements

            XVI.7              Foreign trade

            XVI.8              Transport and telecommunications

XVI.9              Finance, banking, taxation, national budgets

There are also sections throughout the Library relating to the economies of individual countries studied by the School. The classification remains similar to the layout above but instead of “Misc.” has a mnemonic relating to a specific country e.g. general works on the Polish economy would be found at P.XVI.1 but works on Russian finance and banking would be found at R.XVI.9

Records for all books held by UCL SSEES Library published 1988 onwards will be found in the Library catalogue, Explore.  When the Library has access to an electronic version of a book, a record will also be found in Explore with a link to access the e-book version on-line. For help and useful tips on how to search, see the guide to using Explore. For information about finding and requesting books, pamphlets, rare books or store items see our FAQ.

Some materials with an earlier publication date will also have records included in Explore, but on rare occasions older, little-used material will only be found in the card catalogue (2nd floor, UCL SSEES Library).  These books may still be borrowed; just take the book to the Issue Desk as normal.  Books with a STORE location can be requested either via Explore or from the Stores Service.

Journals

  • Printed Journal

UCL SSEES Library subscribes to both print and electronic versions of newspapers and journals.  Some journals will only be available in print form, some only electronically and some in both forms. To discover which versions are available check the library catalogue by inputting the journal title.

Print versions of current newspapers and journals are kept on the Lower Ground Floor in an alphabetical sequence by title of journal.  They are not available for loan.

Previous years holdings of more heavily used journals are retained in the rolling stacks on the Lower Ground Floor but some less intensively-used journals and newspapers may be held in other locations.  Check the library catalogue for details of location and holdings.

Journals with a STORES location can be requested either via Explore or from the Stores Service.

E-resources

  •  E-journals

Search e-journals and journal articles in MetaLib. You can scope this list by subject if you wish.  Click on the 'Subject' tab and select category ‘Business, Economy and Management’, then click on a sub-category and  then on 'Go'. You can also search for  journals and journal articles in Explore or in specialist databases available to members of UCL. For help and useful tips on how to search, see the guide to using Explore. For information on finding and requesting journals, journal articles or store items see our FAQ.

If you are on-site using a computer running on the UCL network, your access to the journals will usually be automatically authenticated and you should not need to enter a username and password.  If you are off-site you will be prompted for your UCL computing username and password when you try to access an e-journal title. For more information on how to use E-journal see our FAQ   or the UCL E-journal FAQs

  •  Databases

Not all databases are equal.  Some provide access to Primary Resources (i.e. data-rich source material, factual, raw data with little or no commentary or interpretation), others to Secondary Resources (predominantly commentary and analysis of raw data, news and current affairs) and still others to Search aids, indexes and bibliographies.

Databases can be accessed via Metalib, Explore  or in specialist databases  available to members of UCL. For help and useful tips on how to search, see the guide to using Explore and the guide to Metalib.

Other economics resources at UCL can be found in the main UCL library services website under subject support for economics.
